Hepatitis is a condition that causes inflammation of your liver. Currently, there are an estimated 6 million people living with hepatitis in the United States, and more than 50,000 people are diagnosed with this disease every year. There are three primary types of hepatitis, and while their symptoms can be similar, they vary largely in the ways they're transmitted. Learning more about each type of hepatitis can help you better understand the condition as a whole.

Hepatitis A is the most easily transmitted of the three viruses. It affects approximately 2,500 people every year in the United States. It typically spreads through feces-contaminated food or water and is found in the feces of people who have the virus. Hepatitis A causes a short-term, acute sickness that most people heal from without treatment. However, it can cause serious illness in some people. This virus is more common in places with underdeveloped sanitation systems.

While doctors can't treat hepatitis A with medication, people who get this virus can manage its symptoms with fluids, rest and good nutrition. There's also a safe and effective vaccine available to protect you against hepatitis A.

What Is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B can occur both acutely (meaning it develops quickly and lasts a short time) and chronically (meaning it develops slowly over time and worsens over months or years). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 2 million people in the United States are chronically affected with hepatitis B. Hepatitis B can be transmitted through sexual activity and exposure to infected blood. It can also be passed from a parent to their newborn child during birth.

Hepatitis B usually causes short-term discomfort that many people recover from completely after about four to eight weeks. However, it can turn into a chronic condition that lasts for years; this is more likely in older adults. Doctors can treat severe chronic hepatitis B with antiviral medications. However, in most cases, treatments focus on proper hydration and nutrition. There's a safe vaccine available to protect you against hepatitis B, too.

What Is Hepatitis C?

Approximately 4 million people in the United States are affected with hepatitis C. This form of hepatitis causes a chronic illness in over 50% of people who get this type of the virus. It's the least transmissible of the three viruses and can spread through contact with infected blood.

Hepatitis C occurs more commonly in people who engage in intravenous drug use. If you received a blood transfusion before 1992, you should also get tested for hepatitis C if you haven't previously. Hepatitis C can spread through unprotected sexual intercourse, but this is a less common way to transmit it. While there's no vaccine for chronic hepatitis C, treatments that are available today offer a 95% cure rate.

Chronic hepatitis C can significantly affect how your liver works. It can cause cirrhosis, which means that your normal liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue. It can also cause liver cancer. However, there are medications that can help keep this disease in check. Making lifestyle changes, such as reducing or eliminating alcohol from your diet, can also decrease your chances of experiencing complications. In severe cases, hepatitis C may require a liver transplant.

The varying forms of viral hepatitis affect millions of people in the United States. Chronic hepatitis often has few symptoms in its early stages, so recognizing the associated dangers and getting tested if you've been exposed may save your life. Although there are five types of viral hepatitis, only A, B and C are the forms commonly found in the United States.

Walk through the aisles of any pharmacy when you're trying to keep an impending cold at bay and you'll be met with a slew of options — from over-the-counter medications to cough drops, herbal teas to vitamin C powders.

The belief that vitamin C can help you steer clear of a nasty cold has been around for decades but has since been disproven. That said, vitamin C can help with your cold in other ways. Here's what you need to know.

Vitamin C does not prevent colds

"Nobel prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling famously claimed in the 1970s that high doses of vitamin C prevented the common cold ," says Mike Sevilla, a family physician in Salem, Ohio.

But Pauling had little evidence to back his claim. The foundations of his argument came from a single study of a sample of children in the Swiss Alps, which he then generalized to the overall population.

Turns out he overgeneralized, and numerous studies have since disproved Pauling's claim.

"Unfortunately, follow-up research has shown that vitamin C does not prevent the common cold," Sevilla says. Yet this misconception continues to live on.

"In my family practice office, I see patients from a variety of cultures and backgrounds and the use of vitamin C for the common cold is well known across all of them," Sevilla says.

Vitamin C can help you get over a cold faster

So if you are healthy, feeling well, and are just trying to prevent catching the cold, vitamin C can't do much for you. But if you're already sick, it's a different story.

"It can shorten the length of a cold and decreases the severity of the illness," Sevilla says.

But if you want to cut down your cold time, you'll likely need more than the recommended dietary amount. The Food and Nutrition Board at the National Academies recommends 75 to 90 mg of vitamin C a day for adults. To fight that cold, you'll need more than double that amount.

In one 2013 review, from the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, researchers found evidence from multiple trials that participants who took at least 200 mg of vitamin C regularly over the course of a trial got over their cold faster than participants who took a placebo. Adults who took vitamin C saw an 8% reduction in the duration of their cold compared to the placebo group. And children had an even larger reduction — by 14%.

Plus, the review also found that, as Sevilla says, vitamin C can also reduce the severity of the cold once you have one.

You can easily get 200 mg of vitamin C from eating a small papaya, which has about 96 mg, and a cup of sliced red bell peppers, which racks up 117 mg. But a faster way to get an even larger dose is from powders or supplements, which can give you as much as 1,000 mg of vitamin C in a single packet — that's 1,111% to 1,333% of your recommended daily allowance.

The side effects of too much vitamin C

If you're planning to take that much vitamin C every day for an extended period, it merits a talk with a doctor.

Sevilla says that taking more than 2,000 mg of vitamin C daily has been known to cause GI effects like nausea and abdominal pain. It's primarily because of those issues that the tolerable upper intake level — the max you should take unless under the direction of a doctor — is 2,000 mg for adults.

And if you're debating between a food and a supplement, Sevilla recommends sticking with food as your source of vitamin C, if you can manage it.

It's believed that when you're not getting enough B vitamins in your diet, it causes an imbalance in the brain neurotransmitters that create a signal to your brain, leading to depression. Vitamins B3 and B6 added with some folic acid can help improve your mood and reduce anxiety. You can visit your local natural vitamin shop to see what they have, but if you have questions, you should speak to a physician first or do some research to make sure you're taking the right supplements.

Other Conditions

Trials using vitamins B2, B9 and B12 have shown to benefit conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The reason these B vitamins are the best vitamins for arthritis is because they help reduce inflammation and improve joint mobility. Vitamin B12 is one of the best vitamins for fibromyalgia because low levels of the vitamin in your body can increase symptoms, making your pain and discomfort worse and causing muscle weakness, pins and needles, and unexplained aches and pains. B vitamins are also the best vitamins for older men and heart health.

How Does an E-ZPass Work?

Those who commute to work or take road trips regularly, especially over long distances, may have come across toll plazas where you pay to cross over into another region. Lines for cars to pass through tolls can get incredibly long, making for frustrating commutes — especially if you're in a rush. Thankfully, the early 1990s saw the dawn of E-ZPass, which allowed drivers to eliminate the need to stop at tolls across 17 states in the Midwestern and Eastern United States. So, what is E-ZPass — and how, exactly, does it work?

What Is an E-ZPass?

E-ZPass is an electronic toll collection (ETC) system that allows commuters and travelers to prepay with cash or a credit card so that they may easily bypass toll roads, bridges and tunnels throughout certain states in the Midwest and on the East Coast of the United States. E-ZPass is currently accepted in the following states: Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Once enrolled in the system, passholders are able to drive straight through a toll station without stopping thanks to the E-ZPass-specific lanes. Through their state's E‑ZPass program, drivers can choose from a variety of monthly prepaid plans depending upon which one suits their driving habits best. Additionally, businesses can purchase an aptly-named business account with E-ZPass for five or more employees. Best of all, some states' tolls are actually discounted if drivers pay via the E-ZPass system.

Not sure if E-ZPass is worth it? Although other ETC systems in non-E-ZPass states use similar technology, the ever-expanding E-ZPass has rebranded quite a few of these other ETC systems and toll lanes, making it a great long-term investment.

How Does an E-ZPass Work?

With E-ZPass, drivers receive a toll transponder — a small device that can be easily attached to a vehicle's windshield, thus allowing the toll lane to recognize the car as an E-ZPass holder. As the vehicle passes through the specified lane for the program, an overhead antenna searches for and reads the toll transponder. The driver's E-ZPass account is then charged the proper toll amount.

Think you can cheat the system? Not likely. If a vehicle doesn't have a transponder, the E-ZPass system picks up on that. Video cameras attached to the toll plaza will also take pictures of your vehicle and license plate, which means that bill will find you eventually.

How Can You Purchase an E-ZPass?

You can see if your state offers E-ZPass by visiting the E-ZPass Group's official website. The company has a full list of states where the program is offered as well as links to the individual state programs. To participate, you'll have to either fill out an application online, by mail or via fax. Each application requires contact and vehicle information as well as the specific monthly plan and number of transponders you need from E-ZPass. The transponders are free, but customers must keep their accounts stocked with funds so that the tolls are paid automatically.

As a breastfeeding mother, you probably think about everything you consume in terms of the effect it will have on your breastfed baby. If you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C or take supplements with this nutrient, you might wonder whether high doses could affect you or your infant. In general, high doses of vitamin C won't harm your child, but they could cause unpleasant side effects or simply be a waste of money for you.

Vitamin C Positive Effects

Vitamin C plays a role in tissue growth and repair, making it essential for proper development of a breastfeeding infant. It is especially important in the growth of bones, teeth and collagen, a protein found in blood vessels, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. It also helps boost the immune system's ability to fight off disease. Vitamin C occurs in many fruits and vegetables, including citrus fruits, berries, bell peppers and tomatoes, and you can also consume it in supplement form. As a water-soluble vitamin, this nutrient passes into breast milk, so your intake impacts your breastfed baby.

Dosage and Needs for Mom

The body cannot produce its own vitamin C, so you and your baby must both get this vital nutrient from diet. While nursing a baby, you will need more vitamin C than you did during pregnancy or before having your baby. The amount recommended for breastfeeding women, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, is 120 milligrams per day.

Effect on Human Milk

Nursing mothers who consume more than the recommended amount of vitamin C are unlikely to harm their infants because the mother's body seems to tightly control the amount of vitamin C that gets into breast milk. A study in "Food and Nutrition Bulletin" following hundreds of nursing mothers from 1998 - 2000 shows that there is a direct correlation of maternal vitamin C intake and vitamin C concentration in breastmilk. However, according to a different study in the April 1985 issue of "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," breastfeeding mothers who took more than 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C, about 10 times the recommended dose, did not experience an increased level of vitamin C in their breast milk. Instead, as long as the mother is getting sufficient vitamin C, the concentration of this nutrient in breast milk remains at the optimal level for the nursing infant. Any excess vitamin C is excreted through the mother's urine.

Side Effects

Doses of more than 2,000 milligrams per day can lead to upset stomach, diarrhea or intestinal gas. Because excess vitamin C leaves the body and isn't stored in fat or other tissues, it does not cause long-term effects. However, taking extra vitamin C in supplement form is likely to be a waste of money, since the kidneys simply remove it from the body.
